Twitch: Ross’ Geese on Thanksgiving Day

Calumet Park, Chicago

semi-overcast 39 °F

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23

This year I enjoyed a beautiful Thanksgiving at home in Chicago with family; however, I started out the day by singing an alumni service with the Chicago Children’s Choir. Afterwards, I couldn’t resist chasing three ROSS’ GEESE on Chicago’s south side in Calumet Park. They turned out to be easy drive-up birds and provided fantastic, quick birding that didn’t take up too much time on the holiday.

They really stuck out among all the Canadas!

Then, I realized another rarer goose, a CACKLING, had been reported recently among the Canadas here, and I had no trouble locating it either. It is smaller and has a significantly stubbier, “cuter” bill than the surrounding Canadas. See if you can find it in each photo!

It was a happy Thanksgiving indeed. Bird-of-the-day to the Ross’ with runner-up to the Cackling Goose.

Happy birding,
Henry
