Panama Cont’d: Even more photos from Days 3 & 4!
Nuevo Gorgona & Pipeline Rd, Panama
Sunday 7 April 2024 85 °F
While reviewing photos, I noticed a gap from the end of the day on March 12, when we went to Anton Valley, through the first thirty minutes of birding Pipeline Rd the following morning. Oddly, I had uploaded some but only a fraction of the photos taken in this time period. Honestly, I think it’s just a biproduct of taking over 2200 photos on this trip, hah! So there will be a few repeats, but I believe this number of photos and birds warrants its own post so here we are!
Back to TUESDAY, MARCH 12:
I finally got photographic evidence of my lifer GROOVE-BILLED ANI toward the end of our day of birding, in the lowlands of Nuevo Gorgona after leaving Anton Valley.
Mario also stopped us near this salt pond — and here are the aforementioned BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS:
With a Caiman!!
And SOUTHERN LAPWINGS:
WATTLED JACANA:
LITTLE BLUE HERON:
My lifer PANAMA FLYCATCHER!!
And here are better photos of the aforementioned WILLETS!!
This BROWN PELICAN flew by — our only for the trip were here:
OSPREY:
ROYAL TERN:
MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD — Kim called it “Batman bird:”
Seawatching with Mario, Sam, and Susie.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13:
Yes, I know I just posted about this outing too, but some of these photos were too good to pass up! Slightly better shots of the WHITE-WHISKERED PUFFBIRD:
COCOA WOODCREEPER:
I’m pretty sure this was a quick glimpse we had of a SONG WREN at the beginning of the trail:
And a MUCH better photo of the VELVETY MANAKIN female! Yay!!!
As well as more pics of the bizarre COMMON POTOOS, and in different positions! This mom and chick were just the most strangely photogenic birds imaginable. Look at how the mom slowly turns around to aid in her camouflage!
And a few last passerines from Pipeline — my life bird YELLOW-WINGED FLATBILL:
Female WHITE-SHOULDERED TANAGER:
And my lifer YELLOW-GREEN TYRANNULET!
It was a great couple days and I am looking forward to posting about my last day with Susie and Kim in Panama — LOTS of good stuff to come, stay tuned!
Happy birding,
Henry

Henry, I met you when you were just a teenager and you pointed out a sparrow that I was looking for in a field. You were so helpful, kind and personable. Over the years I have enjoyed your blog so very much. Always look forward to your adventures. Thank you for sharing so much with the world. I’ve experienced you grow into the incredible birder that you are. Life is good! Warm wishes, Iris Kilpatrick
