Leatherwood Lake

Eureka Springs, AR

sunny 87 °F

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5:

This afternoon, my friends and I made a brief trip to Leatherwood Lake for some hiking before dinner.

It was a beautiful outing and the single bird highlight was this wildly out of place LESSER SCAUP that should be a thousand miles north of here in Canada this time of the year. It definitely tripped the eBird rare filter, and looks like I was the original finder of this seasonal rarity as it was not reported before me! Cool.

We also spotted a female Box Turtle laying her eggs beside the trail:

My friend Sam (who plays Violetta in La Traviata) photographing the turtle:

And a cool, large fungus growing trailside:

A fun afternoon! Bird-of-the-day of course to the Lesser Scaup with runner-up to a heard-only PRAIRIE WARBLER singing its chromatic scale song.

Happy birding,
Henry
