Day 3: Gola del Furlo

Urbino, Italia

sunny 81 °F

Yesterday, mom, her friend Ann, and my friend Micaela visited a preserve called Furlo Gorge about a half an hour away from the town of Urbania. We were STUNNED by the scenery, and the birding was decent as well!

Before I talk about the park from yesterday, though, I want to mention that two days ago in the night I gained two life birds right here in Urbania: NIGHTINGALE and LITTLE OWL, with both being unphotographed and the second one heard-only.

Some beautiful scenes from the park:

Other species identified but not photographed including a flushed GOLDEN EAGLE, as well as another life bird for me: a hooting TAWNY OWL (in broad daylight!), a close relative of the Barred back at home!

Perhaps my most exciting ID of the day came from the late evening when I was finally tucked under the covers of my host family’s bed, I heard the “toot” call of my life bird EURASIAN SCOPS OWL! I even recorded it from my bedroom in the video below; the call is a simple far-off note repeated a few times throughout this short clip. Very cool, an awesome find!

Bird-of-the-day to the Scops Owl, with runner-up to the Corn Bunting! This afternoon I will be starting my month long opera camp, so posting will probably be a bit more intermittent, but I will do my best to keep y’all updated!

Good birding!
