Day 13: Rotarua

sunny 72 °F

Hi all,

Today we took a long drive from Tairua to Rotarua. Our lunch stop was at a beautiful beach. I saw a few nice gulls there, including the endangered BLACK-BILLED GULLS as well as the more common RED-BILLED and KELP GULLS. Here are the pictures:

The rest of the day consisted of checking in at our motel for the night, bathing in natural hot springs, and eating an awesome pizza dinner. A nice avian highlight seen during the soak in the hot springs was a pair of GREENFINCHES.

Bird-of-the-day to the obliging BLACK-BILLED GULLS. It is always a nice treat to have an endangered species come so close.

Tomorrow we drive to the beautiful Lake Taupo. Stay tuned every day, because I have a kiwi night tour and a pelagic birding tour planned for the near future!

Good birding,
Henry
